The European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS) project was launched by Eurostat and the European Statistical System (ESS) in 2014. If the M.Sc. Programme is awarded with the EMOS Label, then graduation by successful defence of the Master Thesis, results in obtaining two diplomas in parallel: Master title given by a specific University and the EMOS supported by Eurostat and the ESS. The initiative is based on the active cooperation between the universities and national statistical institutes (NSI), as well as other official agencies and non-governmental organizations, in aim to connect academic community with the official statistics producers. The collaboration has several dimensions, including preparing courses curriculums and running lectures together, where statistical entities challenge and support didactic process by providing the most up-to-date practical issues and methodological problems of domestic and European official statistics. Moreover, the academic education is integrated with the dedicated internships, organized by Official Statistics entities, which results in the Master Thesis and relevant work experience of the EMOS graduate. The European perspective of the EMOS also makes a solid basis of the academic network within which universities share teaching experiences, discuss best practices regarding cooperation with the Official Statistics entities and exchange students as well as courses and lecturers.

The ESS and Eurostat are the initiators and the beneficiaries of the EMOS as the programme’s foundations meet Official Statistics organizations training needs and cover demand for highly educated professional statisticians.

The EMOS Community is planned to become a core for the future professionals in Official Statistics.

The EMOS label is awarded by the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC) for four years, renewable upon continued fulfilment of EMOS requirements.

To learn more about the EMOS, please see the official website: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cros/content/what-emos_en at The Collaboration in Research and Methodology for Official Statistics Website Portal (CROS) by the European Commission or/and the European Statistical System (ESS) website:  https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/ess/about-us/emos .
